The escalating tension between India and Pakistan after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 has come as a boon for Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the coalition government he is leading.
Now the two arch-rival nuclear nations of South Asia have agreed to a ceasefire after US President Donald Trump mediated, and the exchanges of firing ended. However, for Oli the tension came as a big relief because the Pahalgam attacks occurred at a time when the Indian leaders were reportedly working to replace the Oli-led government in Nepal. But immediately after the attack, the same Indian leaders had to engage in the war against Pakistan. Moreover, the same leaders had to meet Prime Minister Oli to garner Nepal’s support in the case. Two influential Bharatiya Janata Party leaders– Vijay Chauthaiwale and Bhagat Singh Koshyari arrived in Nepal in an interval of a week and met Nepali leaders including PM Oli. This provided an opportunity for Oli to improve his sour relations with the Indian ruling party.
Now India and Pakistan are holding talks to sort out the tensions and the talks are likely to get lengthened and the longer the time the two nations take to reach an agreement, the more time will Oli get to remain in power. And if the two nations return to a war again, it will also be highly beneficial for Oli in Nepal.
In a surprising speech, Prime Minister Oli on Monday even claimed that India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire as he wished for that. Addressing Buddha Jayanti function in Lumbini Oli said that India and Pakistan which were in a position to fight backtracked as he wished for peace and urged them to maintain peace. His speech has become a troll.
