Kathmandu, May 4: Senior leader of Nepali Congress Shekhar Koirala has said that the alliance with UML should be broken immediately. He said this while addressing the first convention of Nepal Tharu Association Nawalpur at Nawalpur on Saturday.

He alleged that the present combination was seriously damaging the democratic values and the spirit of the constitution by pushing the country towards 'UML-ization'. Dr Koirala made it clear that it was not a democratic process for the NC-UML to move ahead together on a serious issue like a constitution amendment.

He said it would be against the spirit of democracy to change the constitution without the consent of other political parties including the Maoist Centre, Madhes-based parties, RPP and RSP. He expressed serious concern that the government was preparing to bring a bill related to social media by deceiving the parliament. Bringing the bill without consulting stakeholders is a threat to freedom of expression, he said.

He said that the tendency to rule through repeated ordinances is a product of unconstitutional and authoritarian thinking. He also accused the central government of unnecessarily interfering in the state governments and expressed serious dissatisfaction over the laws related to civil, education and police being framed against the spirit of federalism.
