Kathmandu, May 3: Local political parties and residents have protested against India's construction of an embankment on Nepali land in the periphery of the Birendra forest in Khalanga. India is building an embankment on the Nepalese land after the Mahakali River changed its course in 2070 BS.

The UML District Committee has submitted a memorandum to the Chief District Officer demanding a diplomatic initiative to stop the construction of embankments unilaterally from the Indian side in Nepali territory.

Neighboring India is building an embankment on the bank of the Mahakali River, which flows through Mahakali Municipality-4 and 5. District Committee Chairman Gyanendra Gharti said that a memorandum was submitted to the attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through Chief District Officer Anil Poudel to stop the construction of embankments encroaching the Nepali land and changing the course of the river towards the Nepali side.

He said that the attention of the government has been drawn to resolve the problem as soon as possible through diplomatic means. Chairman Gharti informed that an embankment is being constructed across the Mahakali River and along the international border in the Khulamanchapari area and demanded to stop it.

Chief District Officer Poudel informed that he has communicated to take immediate diplomatic initiative regarding the embankment being built by India.
