The pro-monarchy groups, whose first street demonstration in Tinkune, Kathmandu, on March 28 turned violent, resulting in two deaths, destruction of private and public property and arrest of many, including two RPP leaders, and Durga Prasai, commander of the Tinkune protest and dozens of others, have decided to intensify their demonstration in Kathmandu.
After March 28, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party staged two demonstrations in Kathmandu—a peaceful mass meeting at Balkhu on April 8 and a street demonstration at Bijuli Bazaar on April 20. The other groups seeking restoration of monarchy are also organizing demonstrations in different parts of Kathmandu city and other districts.
On Sunday (April 20), the RPP announced to defy the prohibitory order imposed by the government and it did so by displaying pamphlets within the Singha Durbar premises. RPP chairman Rajendra Lingden, vice chair Buddhiman Tamang and lawmaker Gyanendra Shahi were arrested for demonstrating in Singha Durbar and kept in Bhadrakali throughout the day. When Lingden himself was detained, their show in Bijuli Bazaar was led by lawmaker Dipak Bahadur Singh. But the demonstration failed to defy the prohibitory order as a large number of police were mobilised in the area. As planned, the demonstrators offered flowers to police.
Lingden and others were released in the evening. After his release, he said they would continue their protests. RPP organised the demonstration demanding the release of their lawmaker Dhawal Shumsher Rana and vice president Rabindra Mishra and warned of allowing mass arrests. Rana was released on bail on Sunday.
However, the party did not demonstrate thereafter. Only a small group of RPP leaders of the Kathmandu district was seen at Bijuli Bazaar area on Tuesday afternoon.
The RPP organized protest rallies and submitted memorandum letters to the Chief District Officers in 77 districts on Tuesday, April 22.
Meanwhile, Navaraj Subedi Subedi, coordinator of the People's Joint Movement for Restoration of Monarchy, who was under house arrest, was released on Tuesday, while, Prasain, commander of the March 28 people's assembly and RPP's Senior Vice Chairman, Rabindra Mishra, among others, are still under the Police costudy. The Police, under the instruction of the leaders in the government, PM Oli and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, have planned to file several serious cases against them with the plan of sending them to jail for years.
