Kathmandu, April 20: India is constructing embankments on Nepalese land in Khalanga, the headquarters of Darchula. The locals are angry that the local administration and people's representatives are silent as the Indian dodger is running on the Nepali side every day, reports government mouthpiece, Gorkhapatra daily.
According to the locals, India has been building embankments by encroaching on Nepali land after the Mahakali River changed its course following the floods of 2070 BS. Anil Thagunna, a local, claimed that India is building the dam on the land of the bus park, across the Mahakali River, where the Mahakali River was running before 2070 and legally still has the name of Nepal on the map.
About 50 ropani land of Nepal has been encroached on by India while constructing embankments by ignoring the request of the local citizens and administration. Another local Krishna Dhami said that the work, which was stopped due to local obstructions in the past, has now started again. Local Sundar Singh Dhami said that when the team of the Department of Survey conducted an inspection in the past, it was found that the land belonged to Nepal, but the survey report has not been made public. He said that the work of the embankment being constructed by India on Nepali land should be stopped immediately by making the records of the Survey Department.
Now that the River has not flowed to the previous borderline, civil rights activist Kamalraj Joshi said, "After the flood of 2070, the River changed the course, and the land across the Mahakali River also belongs to the Nepali territory. India has been encroaching on this land after the Mahakali River changed the course".
Mahesh Bhatt, president of the civil society Darchula, said that India should build the dam only by leaving the land of Nepal. Objecting to the construction of such a border dam by India in sovereign Nepal, he has requested the government to stop the work immediately. Anil Poudel, chief district officer of Darchula, said that necessary reporting to the Ministry of Home Affairs has been made and requested to stop work with the Indian administration at the local level in writing and verbally, however, the Indian side has not responded.
India has been told that the work should be stopped on the request made by the Nepalese administration. Instead of stopping the work, it is being done by increasing machines and manpower, a security official said, "On Saturday, five dozers were found working in the area. Prajiya Poudel said that the government should resolve the matter diplomatically so that the dispute should not arise again.
India, which has been obstructing the construction of embankments on the river bank on the Nepal side, is carrying out construction works of embankments by diverting the flow of the River towards the Nepal side. A few months ago, there was a controversy when the Indian dodger came to Khalanga.
