Chinese Ambassador Chen Song, in his recent piece that appeared in The Rising Nepal, has stated that the upcoming SCO Summit in the autumn of this year could be an important platform for Nepal.
According to the rotating chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) for 2024–2025, China will host the SCO Summit in Tianjin in autumn 2025.
In the article entitled, “Upholding Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move”, the Chinese envoy explained, “Nepal officially attained SCO dialogue partner status on March 22, 2016. The SCO provides Nepal with a multilateral platform to engage in regional security, economic development, and cultural exchanges with member states and other dialogue partners”.
“This engagement not only benefits Nepal’s domestic progress but also elevates its international influence,” the Ambassador stated.
“As Nepal’s good neighbour, friend, and partner, China welcomes Nepal’s enhanced participation in the SCO. China stands ready to work with Nepal to uphold the “Shanghai Spirit”, jointly build a brighter future for the SCO, and contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and beyond”.
As an Ambassador of a friendly country, the Chinese envoy has meaningfully described the significance of Nepal’s participation in the SCO Summit.
However, a question remains, whether Nepal, passing through a dilemma, especially, in initiating its foreign policy, will be able to uphold the Shanghai spirit on the background of a hesitant mentality in implementing the Belt and Road Initiative.
