Kathmandu, March 22: Senior journalist Mathabarsingh Basnet passed away this morning while undergoing treatment.

His last rites were performed today at the Pashupati Aryaghat. Congress leader and Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Badri Prasad Pandey, Nepal Communist Party (UML) leader Raghuji Pant, Rastriya Swatantra Party leader Santosh Pariyar, Congress leader Narayan Prakash Saud, Inspector General of Police Deepak Thapa, Federation of Nepalese Journalists President Nirmala Sharma, MPs and Congress leaders, as well as activists, well-wishers and journalists, paid tributes on late Basnet.

Basnet, editor of the Punarjagaran Weekly, a newspaper close to the then NC leader Ganeshman's camp in the Nepali Congress, later became the chairman of the Rastriya Sambad Samiti (RSS) and also the Chairman of the Press Council Nepal.
