The much-anticipated Free Student Union (FSU) election was held across Tribhuvan University’s (TU) constituent and affiliated campuses nationwide on Tuesday. However, the elections were postponed in many of the key campuses, including the TU central campus and Ratna Rajya Campus owing to disputes among the students affiliated rival political parties.
The voting that began from 8:00 am was further postponed in many campuses like the Patan Multiple Campus as students clashed. Likewise, the elections were held in a tense situation in Prithvi Narayan Campus, Pokhara. However, no unwanted incidents were reported during the poll except for clashes in a few campuses.
Interestingly, this time, the two rival student organisations—Nepal Student Union affiliated to the Nepali Congress and the All Nepal National Free Student Union affiliated to the UML allied in a few campuses. Such alliances used to be rare in the past. Yet, in the Pulchowk Engineering Campus, the alliance of the NSU and ANNFSU was defeated by an independent campus.
Earlier, the election was postponed in 14 colleges. TU’s Central Campus in Kirtipur will conduct its election on March 21, while the Padma Kanya Campus will hold elections on March 20.
However, the dates for elections at Shanker Dev Campus, Nepal Law Campus, and Public Youth Campus are yet to be finalized.
The election dates for campuses in Bhairahawa, Butwal, and Paklihawa campuses are also not rescheduled while even election procedures in Janakpur’s Ramswarup Ramsagar Multiple Campus is not finalised.
Fearing violence during the election, the Ministry of Home Affairs has also issued directives to Chief District Officers (CDOs) in 76 districts for security arrangements. The National Human Rights Commission and the Nepal Bar Association monitored the election process on various campuses.
