Kathmandu, March 15: A joint committee has been formed to prepare a study facility for students from SAARC countries, including Maldives, to study medical education in Nepal. Minister for Health and Population Pradeep Poudel on Friday formed a seven-member committee under the coordination of Nepal Medical Council Chairman Prof Dr Choplal Bhusal.

The committee will comprise the policy, planning and monitoring division of the ministry, the chief of the quality measurement and regulation division, the registrar of Nepal Medical Council, the director of the medical education commission and the member secretary.

Minister Poudel and Maldives’ Health Minister Abdullah Khalil had earlier held talks regarding providing medical education to the students of Maldives. As a follow-up to the meeting, a committee has been formed for the agreement.

Spokesperson at the Ministry, Dr Prakash Budhathoki, said the committee would conduct a detailed review of the existing medical education standards and norms in both the countries. “The committee has the mandate to study the standards of the medical councils of the two countries and create an environment for a bilateral agreement and finally a formal signing between the ministries,” he said. Along with this, an environment will be created for the students of other SAARC countries to study in Nepal.
