Nepal’s Past, Present & Future

By Shashi P.B.B. Malla

In his address to the nation and all Nepalese on the occasion of “Prajatantra Diwas” (Democracy Day), former king H.M. Gyanendra reminded his compatriots:

First, that it was his august grandfather H.M. King Tribhuwan that was instrumental in ushering in the modern era and the novel idea of democracy. Nepal’s feudal society was going to be transformed.

Second, H.M. Gyanendra pointed out the pathetic state of the current Himalayan Republic with its endemic corruption and its abject failure to deliver the basic amenities to its citizens.

Third, His Majesty reminded his countrymen and –women that he had made sacrifices then – by voluntarily renouncing the throne – hoping that the political parties flush with power would act speedily to push the country on the path of progress.

Unfortunately, his hopes were dashed to the ground and the Nepali people today are fully dejected – from all walks of life and from every class.

Fourth, His Majesty then made the astounding, but refreshing announcement that he had made sacrifices then, and he was ready and willing to make fresh sacrifices now so that the aspirations of the Nepali people can be realized.

This was a direct challenge to the current political establishment.

Indeed, the pillars of the current Himalayan Republic lie in ruins:

The Republic is in name only; the President acts like a pseudo-monarch.

Federalism has not functioned from the very start. Attempts to make it function is draining the public exchequer.

Secularism as such is a sham. Even now politics and religion are intertwined.

Loktantra (so called ‘People’s Democracy’) has been abject failure. What has been established is the total rule of the Mafia Dons and their political families (so called leaders and their political parties).

His Majesty supports the people’s yearning for change and progress.

This means, first, the overthrow of the current political dispensation.

Second, it constitutes the restoration of Constitutional Monarchy [later placed before the Nepali people in a referendum – which the power-hungry political leaders backed by a foreign power failed to do in 2006-08].

Third, the re-establishment of the Hindu State with its unique blend of toleration and syncretism – indeed exceptional in the world, and very unlike Indian Hinduism.

Nepal will once again become the only Hindu Kingdom in the world!

The King has spoken – Now the Time for Action is Upon Us!

The time is indeed ripe to rid our beloved homeland of the anti-national and anti-social elements festering our national society.

The leaders of the progressive segments of Nepali society must plan carefully and diligently – but speedily – to bring about peaceful change. Jai Nepal!
