
Kathmandu, March 3: Nepali Congress leader and former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala, who is currently on a visit to China, has said that Nepal should implement the BRI immediately. Koirala, daughter of former prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala, said that she will hold talks with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and party Chairman Sher Bahadur Deuba upon her return from China regarding the implementation of the BRI.
At a discussion program on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with professors of the Renmin University in the Chinese capital, Beijing, Koirala said that all political parties and citizens should be aware that the BRI is a mutual assistance program without grants and that the Nepal government has signed an agreement accordingly.
She also said that Nepal should not take subsidies from any country, including China, as it is self-respecting. She said that the BRI will help Nepal to become independent and self-reliant. Leader Koirala also accused those who did not want development in Nepal of opposing the BRI by raising the issue of subsidies.
She also said that BRI will help Nepal in modernizing the agriculture sector, as this sector is important for Nepal. In the program, Professor Chyo Lu of Renmin University informed that landlocked countries can benefit from BRI.
Professor Lu said that the BRI has been introduced in 152 countries and everyone, including China, will benefit from it. Prof. Luledhei, while referring to BRI, said that there may not be immediate benefits from BRI, however, there are a lot of benefits from it in the long run.
Nepali Congress Dolakha President Barma Lama said that it is necessary to inform all about the BRI to all the Nepalis as confusion has been spread regarding BRI at the people’s level.
NC leader Devraj Chalise said that the BRI should be able to address the problem of lack of labor, resources, manpower and time, as well as lack of practice and capital in Nepal.
