The suspicious death of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepali student studying at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, last week brought about how Nepali students are misbehaved in India and how the university authorities undermine Nepal.
Prakriti Lamsal died after being unable to tolerate harassment from an Indian student who was protected by the university because he was the son of a powerful leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
Despite lodging complaints by Lamsal, the KITT administration did nothing, prompting Lamsal to take her own life.
Moreover, the KITT authorities ill-treated and thrashed the Nepali students for opposing the death. They were expelled from the hostel and sent to railway stations far away from the KITT. However, when the Nepali as well as Indian media reported the inhumane incidents, and Nepali authorities raised the issues with Indian leaders, KITT authorities tried to control the damage by asking Nepali students to return to the hostel. However, of about 1200 Nepali students, only 285 returned prompting KITT authorities to postpone exams and take measures to lure students.
Above all, the KITT authorities have been humiliating the Nepali students stating that the budget of their university was bigger than Nepal’s annual budget. They said they were feeding the Nepali students although the students were there paying fees and hostel charges.
Despite such humiliating comments from the KITT authorities, Nepali leadership did not object to them. They have chosen to stay silent.
