
Kathmandu, February 23: Considering possible clash between the “No Cable Car” and pro-cable car groups around the Pathivara Shrine” the local administration has imposed a prohibition order around the tense area in Taplejung district, East Nepal.
The no-cable car group launched a torchlight rally on Saturday evening to protest the construction of a cable car to reach the Pathivara Temple. A confrontation between the “No Cable Car” group and police took place.
Considering possible clashes between pro-cable car and no-cable car groups, the local administration in the Taplejung district has issued a prohibition order around the Phungling market and Kaflepati, the site where the cable car station is planned to be constructed.
Police personnel and protesters were also injured in the clash on Saturday evening. The group returning from Kaflepatty had taken out a rally with slogans at Phungling. In the process, a clash took place in Birendra Chowk.
When the protesters attempted to set fire to homes and threw fires at police, a clash between the police and the protestors occurred. Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma informed that the police used force to control the situation.
District administration chief Sharma said that the prohibitory order has been issued from 5 pm on Sunday until further orders.
He said that a prohibition order is issued in the Fungling Municipality area due to the tense situation and possible clash between the pro and anti cable car groups.
A section of the locals believe that construction of the cable car would boost tourism and it would facilitate pilgrimages to visit the Pathivara Temple, whereas, those anti-cable car groups are saying that construction of the cable car would destroy its religion and culture.
Pathivara is a famous holly shrine of the Limbu community and also the Hindu followers. Thousands of pilgrims visit the Holy Shrine every year.
There is the possibility of attracting a large number of tourists from different parts of the country including neighboring Indian cities Sikkim, Bhutan and West Bengal if developed the area by adding facilities for the pilgrims.
