
Kathmandu, February 22: Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey has said that it is necessary to preserve existing mother languages in the country.
He made this statement while addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Language Laboratory in Kathmandu on Friday. He said that there are 131 ethnic languages in Nepal and that the number could increase further.
Minister Pandey said that the main duty of the Language Commission is to protect and promote ethnic languages. He informed the Language Commission that it is necessary to protect and promote the language by taking guardianship of the languages spoken in the whole of Nepal. He mentioned that the ministry is taking the initiative to make a federal language act and has reached the Ministry of Law.
