With the mysterious death of a Nepali student, Prakriti Lamsal, at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KITT) University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, and the subsequent ill-treatment meted out against the Nepali students by the campus administration for seeking justice to the deceased student have sparked not only controversies but also raised concerns about the safety of Nepali students studying in India.

After KITT University administration used brutal force against the students and expelled them from the hostel, its act drew criticism not only in Nepal but also in India prompting the KITT administration to withdraw its decision within a day.

When Nepal opposed the incident through diplomatic channels, KITT was compelled to appeal to the students which it expelled to return to the university hostel on Monday evening.

It is said that Lamsal died after being unable to bear torture from an Indian student on the campus.  Though she filed a complaint with the administration, no action was taken against the Indian student.

With the death and mass expulsion of Nepali students, KITT administration was under pressure as the incident was widely covered by the media both in Nepal and India. In Nepal, lawmakers in both the House of Representatives and National Assembly, raised the issue while in India, members of Odisha State Assembly also condemned the incident.

Nearly, 1500 Nepali students are studying in KITT now.

The government on Tuesday warned of not issuing NOC for the students willing to study in Odisha.

The Odisha incident has shown that Nepali students are not safe in India and the government should take strong measures for the safety of the students.
