Kathmandu, February 1: The Chitwan National Park has started rhino translocation internally from today. After the rhino population increased in the western region of the park, the four rhinos there are being shifted to the eastern region of the park.
A few years ago, a study was conducted to relocate the rhino internally, but the relocation work was started only last year. Last year, six rhinos were relocated.
According to the Chief Conservation Officer of the park, Dr. Ganesh Pant, all preparations have been completed for the relocation this time. The technical team has started preparing for the transfer from the Amaltari sector of the western region.
The relocation works will be conducted with the help of elephants, technical manpower, staff, and security forces.
Dr. Pant said, "This time two male and two female baby rhinos are being transferred. "
The decision to relocate has been taken according to the report of the study team formed by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation.
The report stated that 60 per cent of the rhinos were in the western region from Kasara and their relocation would facilitate the habitat. He said that adult rhinos would not be taken during the relocation. The transfer is expected to be completed within two weeks.
According to the park's information officer, Avinash Thapa Magar, the relocation is also expected to help in breeding the infection among the rhinos of the western and eastern regions.
He informed that the rhinos brought from the west are being prepared to be released in Khagendramalli and Pyridhap areas of the eastern region.
Three years ago, the Department had formed a study team on rhino relocation under the leadership of Deputy Director General Bed Kumar Dhakal. According to the latest census, there are 752 rhinos in Nepal, including 38 in Bardiya, 17 in Shuklaphanta, 694 in Chitwan, and 3 in Parsa.
