The Martyrs’ Week that began on January 23 concluded on Wednesday by organising a formal ceremony at the central level.

Martyrs’ Week is celebrated every year in coordination with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).However, it seemed, the leaders of the Republic of Nepal gave less importance to the martyrs.

It was evident from the fact that only Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol was present to pay tribute to the great four martyrs Shukraraj Shastri, Dharmabhakta, Gangalal and Dasharath on January 23 and 28. No other leaders and government ministers were present for the whole week.

The four martyrs got martyrdom for launching a political movement against the Rana rulers in 1940s.

However, now every political party has their own martyrs as the number of martyrs has been added by every political party when they reach power. Even those who were killed for raping women during the Maoist insurgency are on the list of martyrs now.

As the consecutive governments devalued the importance of the martyrs by adding their activists to the list of martyrs, the true martyrs are not getting the expected respect from the people as well as the leaders. This was reflected during the Martyrs Week this year.
