Kathmandu, January 24: Former chief commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation on Abuse of Authority (CIAA), Suryanath Upadhyay, has said that the government has failed to provide security to the citizens of own country.

Speaking at the National Security Assembly held in Kathmandu on Friday, he said that Nepalis are unsafe in their own country due to the open border with India and the government did not pay attention to it.

He said, “We are proud to have open borders with India.” It is also a special arrangement. There is no security in our situation”.

The question is how many foreigners live in Nepal, for how long they have lived, how many Indians are there, how long their children live in Nepal, the government has no record at all, Upadhaya said.

“Life is not safe. We are not safe in our own country. This government cannot provide security to the citizens of the country due to the open border with India”, he said.

Similarly, he questioned whether the existence of the country is big or whether the issue of tourism promotion is big, the government has failed to define. The government is giving priority to keeping open borders to promote tourism, which is wrong.

The government is only thinking about tourism development rather than the safety of the citizens, he said and added that Nepal would not be independent as long as the southern border remained open.

He said, “The government should regulate Nepal’s open border with India”, he remarked.

Nepal cannot remain independent unless we regulate the Nepal-India border and Nepali cannot remain safe until keeping the border open, he said adding that anytime, Indians can come here and kill Nepali nationals.
