
Kathmandu, January 19: The public debt has crossed 25 trillion rupees. In the six months of the current financial year, with the addition of one trillion, two billion 30 million rupees loans, the total public debt has reached 25.36 trillion 13.14 million rupees.
According to the Public Debt Management Office, public debt accounts for 44.46% of gross domestic product (GDP). According to the National Statistics Office, Nepal's GDP is estimated at Rs 57.5 billion. At the beginning of the fiscal year, the total public debt stood at 24,34.98 billion rupees.
During this period, the government has taken a total loan of Rs 240.87 billion, but it has paid only interest on the loan of Rs 182.49 billion i.e. 45.28 percent of the target. In the current fiscal, the government has set a borrowing target of Rs 547 billion, of which Rs 330 billion is on the domestic side and Rs 217 billion is on the external side. Out of this target, 43.89% of loans have been received within six months.
Out of the total borrowing by the Government, the current borrowing is Rs.1,81.54 billion i.e. 54.86 per cent of the target on the internal side and Rs.59.33 billion i.e. 27.20 per cent of the target on the external side. At present, the government's internal debt stands at Rs 12,34,771.41 crore and external debt at Rs 13,141.73 crore. In the external debt this year, there has been a loss of 11.61 billion rupees to the government.
In the current fiscal year, the government has paid 127.24 billion rupees of internal debt and 27.952 million rupees of interest. Similarly, Rs 22.42 crore 89 lakh has been paid as external debt and Rs 4.77 crore 82 lakh as interest.
This year, the government still has to pay Rs 220.44 billion in interest and interest. Out of which 31.51 billion 777 million rupees are to be paid from the internal side and 17.87 billion 759 million from the external side. According to the 2010 census, Nepal's population is 291,64,578. On this basis, the burden of loan per person comes to about 86 thousand 960 rupees.
Over the past decade, Nepal's public debt has grown rapidly to nearly 20 trillion rupees. Experts say that in addition to the impact on revenue collection due to earthquakes, blockades and the corona epidemic, the debt is also increasing due to the increase in the government's responsibility. Public debt rose from 54 billion rupees in 2071/72 to 615 billion rupees in 2072/73.
Similarly, there is a public debt of Rs.697 billion in 2073/74, Rs.919 billion in 2074/75, Rs.1048 billion in 2075/76, Rs.1433 billion in 2076/77, Rs.1737 billion in 2077/78, Rs.2010 billion in 2078/79, Rs.2295 billion in 2079/80 and Rs.2434 billion in 2080/81.
Capital expenditure has not improved in proportion to the increase in public debt. According to the Comptroller and Auditor General's Office, the capital expenditure during the six-month period was 56.93 billion rupees or 16.16 percent of the target.
