
Kathmandu, January 14: Maghe Sankranti, which is celebrated on the first day of the month of Magha according to the solar calendar, is being celebrated across the country today taking baths in rivers and performing holy rituals.
On the day of Maghe Sankranti, a large number of devotees gather at Devghat, Trishuli, Kaligandaki, Bagmati, Indravati, Triveni, Ridi, etc rivers to take a holy bath. Special fairs are also held at these holly places.
Magha 1 is also known as Makar Sankranti as the sun ends its journey towards south and moves towards north and the night becomes shorter than the day due to Surya Uttharayan. Maghe Sankranti is also the festival to eat ghee, molasses (sweet produced from sugarcane juice), yam, sweet sugar, khidhdi and other delicious items including meat.
The Tharu community observes the festival as their new year.
