Almost seven months after the formation of the present government led by KP Sharma Oli of the CPN-UML, it has been revealed that constitution amendment, which the NC and UML leaders claimed to be main agenda for the formation of the NC-UML coalition government, was just a pretext.
Prime Minister and UML chair KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday while addressing the closing session of the party's central committee meeting said that they would amend the constitution only in 2087 BS.
When the UML leaders confused by the statement of Oli reminded him whether he mistook 2083 for 2087, Oli reiterated that the constitution would be amended only in 2087.
Now with the PM's statement it has been clear that the NC and UML had told a lie to the people in June last year when they formed the odd coalition of the two rival parties.
Surprisingly, Oli made the statement just two weeks after the NC and UML had begun homework to amend the constitution.
After holding several rounds of meetings in the Prime Minister's official residence in Baluwatar, the NC and UML, two weeks ago, decided to form a political mechanism to amend the constitution.
However, such mechanisms were to be separate—NC will form one and UML another and they will forward their plans.
Constitution amendment was one of the key agenda in the seven-point agreement inked by the two parties while forming the present government in July this year.
In point 2 of the agreement, it is mentioned that after the implementation of the Constitution, the Government of National Consensus will review the strengths and weaknesses and complications that have emerged in practice and give priority to the necessary amendments to the Constitution and the creation of appropriate laws for political stability. But, they have not forwarded any concrete plan regarding the amendment of the constitution for almost six months.
Now PM Oli had made it clear that the two parties' claim for constitution amendment was just another lie.
