Almost six months after the formation of the present government led by KP Sharma Oli with the constitution as the main agenda for the odd coalition of the two rival parties, NC and UML have finally begun homework to amend the constitution.

After holding several rounds of meetings in the Prime Minister's official residence in Baluwatar, the NC and UML have decided to form a political mechanism to amend the constitution.

However, such mechanisms will be separate—NC will form one and UML another and they will forward their plans.

Constitution amendment was one of the key agendas in the seven-point agreement inked by the two parties while forming the present government in July this year.

In point 2 of the agreement, it is mentioned that after the implementation of the Constitution, the Government of National Consensus will review the strengths weaknesses and complications that have emerged in practice and give priority to the necessary amendments to the Constitution and the creation of appropriate laws for political stability. But they have not forwarded any concrete plan regarding the amendment of the constitution for almost six months.

Minister of Home Affairs, Ramesh Akhtar, who has been participating in the recent meeting, revealed on Tuesday about the plan of forming a mechanism to amend the constitution.

It has been decided to form a working group consisting of two parties to carry out the homework of constitutional amendment, he said.

According to him, the mechanism will review 10 years of the implementation of the constitution and identify issues for amendment.

While ruling parties have just started works to form mechanisms, the opposition parties, mostly the Maoist Centre and CPN (Unified Socialist) have already discussed the issues within the parties and have reportedly prepared their reports on constitution amendment.
