It seems Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has now a single mission—to pay an official visit to India.
Right from his dramatic ascent to power in the backing of the Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba, Oli has been trying to receive an invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi but in vain.
After all his efforts to visit India failed, he flew to China earlier this month and signed the BRI framework, which has further irked India.
Immediately after his return from China, he said that he would soon visit India. However, three weeks after he made the statement in Jhapa on December 8, no progress has been achieved.
Instead, it seems India is not interested in inviting Oli this time. It was evident from the way the Indian politicians and diplomats treated Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba and former Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali in India.
On Thursday last week, Foreign Minister Deuba reached New Delhi from Germany, after her three-week Europe tour, in the name of addressing an event orgainsed by the Kathmandu University in New Delhi. Her key purpose for the India visit was to convince the Indian leader to extend an invitation to PM Oli and undergo health check-ups. But she was unable to meet with her counterpart S. Jaishankar and even other leaders in BJP.
Former Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali also reached Delhi in the name of addressing another event. He was sent by Oli to convince the Indian establishment. But both Arzu and Gyawali failed in their mission as the Indian leaders avoided them.
Surprisingly, Arzu could not meet even BJP’s Foreign Department in charge Dr. Vijay Cahuthaiwale, with whom she has personal relations, not to talk about Foreign Minister Jaishankar.
When her attempt to meet the Indian leaders failed, she returned home on Monday.
Media reports have it that when Foreign Minister Rana tried to meet the Indian leaders, all of them responded to her ‘to see later’.
The recent visit of Rana and Gyawali showed that India does not want to invite Oli this time.
During her earlier visit in August, Rana had met Indian PM Modi and received a warm welcome. But this time, she did not receive such a welcome India.
