The District Government Attorney’s Office in Kaski has filed charge sheets against 44 individuals, including former Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane, at the District Court, Kaski for their involvement in Suryadarshan Cooperative fraud, organised crime and money laundering.

The District Government Attorney’s Office, Kaski, registered the case on Sunday afternoon.

Others who faced the cases include former DIG Chhabilal Joshi, Lila Pachhai, Ram Bahadur Khanal, and Krishna Bahadur Gurung.

Additionally, cases have been filed against eight companies involved in the scam.

In total, the case was filed against 31 individuals, eight companies, and five persons, making altogether 44 defendants.

Earlier, Kaski Police had recommended 51 individuals as defendants in their report submitted last Monday.

Thirty-one individuals face charges related to cooperative fraud, and 19 are also accused of organised crime.

The defendants face demands for four to six years of imprisonment for cooperative fraud, an additional 50 per cent sentence for organised crime, and two to 15 years for property laundering.

Kaski Police submitted a report to the Government Attorney’s Office, Kaski, on December 16 after more than three months of investigation into the fraud involving Suryadarshan Cooperative.

The indictment seeks a total claim of Rs. 1.514 billion in damages.

Meanwhile, the Parliament Secretariat of the Federal Parliament has issued a notice declaring the suspension of Rabi Lamichhane, the president of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), from his position as a Member of the House of Representatives, after he faced the case of money laundering.

In a notice issued on Monday evening, General Secretary of the Secretariat Padam Prasad Pandey informed that Lamichhane’s position as an MP was automatically suspended.

“According to the provision under Section 27 of the ‘Money Laundering Prevention Act- 2008,’ an employee, official, or public servant shall be considered automatically suspended during the period of detention and until the resolution of a case filed under Section 22. This notification has been published for the purpose of implementing this legal provision,” stated the notice.

Lamaichhane is a Member of Parliament elected from Chitwan Constituency No. 2. He was also the parliamentary party leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party.

After cases were filed against Lamichhane, the RSP has designated Dol Prasad Aryal as acting president of the party.

Earthquake in Bajura destroys 123 houses, victims unable to get relief materials

The earthquake of Sunday morning destroyed 123 houses in Bajura.

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake, with its epicentre at Gotri in Ward No.5 of Jagannath Rural Municipality, caused damages to 123 houses, mostly in Upper and Lower Gotri.

Although no human casualty was reported, the earthquake caused significant physical damage. 

According to Gauri Sarki, ward chairperson of ward-5, the earthquake further damaged the houses which had developed cracks in the earthquake that hit the district last year.

As the earthquake hit the district in the cold winter season, the people are facing difficulties in finding safe places to live and even food.
