Kathmandu, December 22: Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has said that he is contesting for the post of the party president in the upcoming 15th National Convention of the party.
In a press conference organized by Nepal Press Union Kailali in Dhangadhi on Sunday, leader Koirala said that he will again contest and ensure his victory as the party president.
Koirala claimed that the team that supported him in the 14th National Convention is still as it is. He claimed that Chief Minister Gagan Thapa was also in his team.
Stating that he is preparing to contest the election in the 15th national convention of the party. Koirala said that there is no distance in relations between him and Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba. He said that President Deuba is a respectable leader not only of Far West Nepal but also of the country.
He said that although the basic agenda of the current government is to amend the constitution, attention has not been paid to it. Stating that the Constitution should not be amended by the Congress-UML alone, he said that it should be discussed with other parties as well.
Koirala reached Far West Nepal and held meetings with the NC’s local leaders with the plan of contesting for the post of the party president.
In the 14th national convention, Koirala was defeated by Deuba. As Deuba has already completed two tenures as the president, according to the party statute, he cannot contest for the third time.
Although Koirala has already started his election campaign, the party has not started preparation for the national convention. According to the party statute, the President can extend the tenure of the central committee.
