US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs under the outgoing President Joe Biden Administration, Donald Lu, returned home on Monday completing his two-day stay in Kathmandu.

Lu met former prime ministers Sher Bahadur Deuba and Pushpakamal Dahal and also Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel.

According to Lu’s itinerary, he was also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, however, Oli, avoiding the meeting, went to Jhapa even after the US Embassy’s formal notice to the PM, reports Drishti vernacular weekly.

The US authorities have taken it as a serious issue, reports the Weekly.

However, another vernacular daily, Rajdhani, reports that Lu didn’t wish to meet PM Oli. When Oli, who had just returned from a visit to China, felt that Lu avoided meeting him, Oli went to Jhapa.

Moreover, PM Oli is suspicious about the collapse of the government led by him due to non-cooperation from the Nepali Congress after inking on the Belt and Road Initiative Cooperation Framework.

The Daily has remarked that India is unhappy with Oli. Therefore, Oli has asked the UML cadres to become ready to counter any activities against the UML.
