Kathmandu, November 15: On the fourth day of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP-29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which began on November 11 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The world leaders expressed their views in the high-level session held on November 12 and 13, as the conference opened amid grand celebrations.
President Ram Chandra Paudel addressed a high-level session on November 12. Similarly, Nepal has drawn the attention of the world to the climate disasters caused by climate change by holding a separate high-level program at the conference.
At the conference, high-level representatives from Nepal and other mountainous countries drew the world's attention to the impact of climate change on the ecological system of the mountainous region. As the impacts of climate change are multifaceted, they called for covering losses for climate finance management. President Paudel called on the world community to protect nature. He said that due to the climate crisis, the mountain areas are unsafe, the snow of the mountains is melting into black stone, there is a risk of a glacial explosion, and the world community should take the mountain issue with high priority. President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov drew attention to the impact of climate change on mountain ecosystems and the way of life of its people, stressing the need for the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat to come up with an action plan. He stressed the need for cooperation among the countries most affected by climate change.
Forest and Environment Minister Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri briefed about the problems faced by Nepal due to climate change. Minister Shahi noted that with the ever-increasing temperature and increasing climate-related incidents around the world, Nepal has recently suffered a devastating natural disaster. He said that the recent rains and the resulting floods have caused more than 250 deaths and many physical damages.
Forest Secretary Dr. Deepak Kumar Kharal mentioned that the problems like melting of the Himalayas and rising sea level due to monsoon climate disasters in Nepal need to be solved together. Noting that the impact of climate-induced disasters in the mountainous areas is not limited to the mountainous areas, he said that its effect is also visible in the coastal areas.
