Kathmandu, October 21: Nepal’s public debt stands at 44.23% of the country’s GDP. According to the Public Debt Management Office, Nepal’s public debt has reached 252.39 billion, or 44.23% of the GDP, by the end of the current fiscal year.

According to the office, the public debt, which was equal to Rs 24,34.98 billion as of the end of the current fiscal year, increased by Rs 136.31 billion in the three-month period.

The government has paid Rs 69.33 billion in public debt during the three months of the current fiscal year.

Out of the total public debt, 12,36.38 billion rupees is domestic debt and 12,86.73 billion rupees is foreign debt. According to the data, 21.67 percent of the gross domestic product and 22.56 percent of the debt of the current fiscal year is domestic and foreign.

The government has set a target of taking public debt of Rs 54.7 billion in the current fiscal year. Of this, 24.92 per cent of the target has been achieved by the end of the month.

Continuous inclining of the public debt and spending it in the non-productive sector is a serious threat to the nation’s economy.
