Kathmandu, September 28: The landslide caused by incessant rain has damaged the headworks of the dam area of the 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project in Bigu Municipality-1 Lamabagar of Dolakha. Power generation has been stopped since 7 pm on Friday due to high water flow in the upper Tamakoshi. All the gates of the dam have been opened. The control room on the right just below the dam site, the desander and the culvert that carries water from the dam to the desander have been damaged. The structure is believed to have suffered major damage due to the landslide that fell from above the location of the control room, desander and culvert. Mohan Gautam, chief executive officer (CEO) of the project's promoter company Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower, said that no one could reach the site of the powerhouse due to flooding in the streams at the entrance to the dam from Gonggar. Gautam said that looking at the nature of the landslide, it is believed that the control room, desander and culvert have caused damage to the structure. Due to the landslide, a large amount of stones and silt have been deposited in the reservoir area. He said two staff members in the control room were rescued and no human casualties have been reported so far. The Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been deployed in Lamabagar in coordination with the District Administration Office, Dolakha. The design discharge of the Tamakoshi project is 66 cumec. The current flow of the Tamakoshi River is 461 cumec at the dam site. According to the power purchase and sale agreement with the Nepal Electricity Authority, the powerhouse has to be closed with the flow of water in the river 250 cumec.
