The Constitution Day was marked Thursday last week by organising formal programmes in Kathmandu, and the capitals of the seven provinces and district headquarters.
Limited in formality, the celebrations were addressed by the leaders in power. However, public enthusiasm was missing as only a few people took part in the rallies organised on the occasion.
While Prime Minister KP Oli addressed a function in the Army Pavilion in Kathmandu, Chief Ministers addressed the events in the provincial capitals of all seven provinces. Nine years after its promulgation, Madhes marked it first time by forming a celebration committee but the people’s participation was not encouraging.
Surprisingly, the government did not release any inmates this Constitution Day fearing backlash as last year, when the President was dragged into controversy for releasing infamous criminals on the occasion. It is said that President Ramchandra Paudel denied endorsing the list of the detainees who were to be freed this time.
Prime Minister Oli had asked commoners to hoist national flags in every house but people defied his request.
