Nepali politics took an important if uncertain turn on September 11 with the termination of the 9-month-old UML government headed by Man Mohan Adhikari and its replacement by an NC/RPP/NSP coalition under Prime Minister Share Bahadur Deuba of the NC.
Yet, almost as if to prove the merchants of gloom and doom correct, the mini cabinet to five which was sworn in by King Birendra the next day was launched against a backdrop of dissent instead of the expected ambience of hoopla and fanfare.
Indeed, the element of dissension within the three-party coalition led one acute political observer to comment in French: plus ca chang, plus c’est La meme chose, which for the uninitiated means simply, the more things change, the more they remain the same.
