Kathmandu, September 20: Chairman of the Maoist Center, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has said that the significance of declaring Nepal a peace zone is increasing.

Receiving a memorandum of the peace zone campaign formed by the public, he said that it is time to advance this proposal to maintain national independence while protecting Nepal from the grip of world politics that is becoming confrontational.

He opined that the zone of peace proposal can be an important agenda to save the country. “During the Panchayat period, due to the political situation at that time, there was no position for any party to support this proposal,” Dahal said, “But now the importance of declaring a zone of peace is increasing for the protection of national independence in the changed political situation and the world situation.”

In the year 2031 BS, the then King Birendra proposed to the international community to declare Nepal a ‘Zone of Peace’. Although the proposal was recognized by more than 130 countries including the US and China. India, which annexed Sikkim, refused to recognize it.

The proposal was quietly removed from the 1990 constitution by the political parties involved in the people’s movement sponsored by India.

Dahal further said many leaders of the Maoist Center are asking to start a debate on the zone of peace proposal within the party.

Dahal said that he favors an open discussion on it. “We are going to make a clear point of view on this matter from the party itself,” said Dahal.

The Shanti Kshetra Abhiyan (campaign for the zone of peace), chaired by senior journalist Narayan Prasad Sharma of Dang, has taken initiatives to move it forward again.
