Kathmandu, September 16: Prime Minister and chair of the Constitution Council, K.P. Sharma Oli has called the meeting of the Council for today.

The meeting may name the new chief justice in the Supreme Court.

The meeting of the Council was ended without a decision when the leader of the main opposition party and member of the Council, Pushpakamal Dahal wished to make a package deal by appointing in all vacant constitutional posts.

The Constitution Council should appoint the heads and members of the constitutional bodies.

The Judesary Council has recommended the names of eight SC justices eligible to become the chief justice. Those justices serving a minimum of three years in the Supreme Court are eligible to become the chief justice. Justice Prakashman Singh Raut is among the senior justices to become the chief justice. There is the possibility of recommending his name by the Constitutional Council today.

After the Council names the new chief justice, the candidate should face the Parliamentary Hearing Committee. Then only the President will appoint the new chief justice.

Present chief justice Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha is going to retire on October 2 and there is a tradition of staying on leave from one month earlier, or September 2. Due to the delay in the appointment of the new chief justice, Shrestha is attending the Supreme Court, however, has stopped looking at the cases.

If today, ‘s Constitutional Council fails to name the new chief justice, it will create a constitutional hurdle.
