The ruling parties have started a campaign to unseat Deputy Speaker Indira Rana.
When the leaders of the two ruling parties floated the idea of removing Rana from her position during their meeting held at Baluwatar on Monday, UML lawmakers, including Gokul Baskota demanded Rana’s resignation citing a controversial letter she wrote to the US Embassy in Kathmandu in the parliament on Tuesday.
When other lawmakers also raised the issue, the Rastriya Swatantra Party leaders opposed the demand calling it undemocratic. Deputy Speaker Rana is from the Rastriya Swatantra Party.
Although the UML leaders cited the letter she wrote to the US Embassy for reason, in reality, the NC and UML want to remove her so that they can enjoy a comfortable majority in the Constitutional Council that appoints officials in the constitutional bodies.
Together with RSP leaders, the Maoist Centre lawmakers also defended Rana in the House meeting on Tuesday.
