Almost two months after the formation of the present UML-NC coalition government under Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, the ruling parties have agreed to prepare and introduce their minimum common programme.

A meeting of the leaders of the ruling parties held at the official residence of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in Baluwatar on Monday evening decided to introduce the common minimum programme.

As the budget and policy documents were unveiled before the formation of the present government, they cannot include new programmes in the budget and policy document, and they are trying to introduce some pro-people programmes through the minimum common programme.

Oli was appointed Prime Minister by replacing Pushpa Kamal Dahal on July 14 after the Nepali Congress and the UML inked a seven-point agreement to form the government under Oli for the first two years and under Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba for the remaining period. The common minimum programme is said to be based on the same 7-point deal.

The meeting on Monday also decided to prepare the minimum common programme as per the spirit of the seven-point agreement. However, the ruling parties will be able to unveil their common minimum programme only at the end of this month as PM Oli is leaving for New York on September 20 and the ruling party leaders may need more time to draft the common minimum programme.
