After taking the oath of office and secrecy from President Ram Chandra Paudel on Monday, Ashok Raj Sigdel Chhetri has assumed the office of the Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS).

President Paudel being the supreme commander of the Nepali Army also conferred an insignia of the Army Chief on Sigdel at a special function held at the Office of President, Sheetal Niwas, this afternoon.

Following the insignia conferring ceremony, Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS) Sigdel assumed the command of the Nepali Army, reaching the Army Headquarters.

Sigdel is the 45th Commander-in-Chief of the Nepali Army.

Following the retirement of the previous Chief of Army Staff, Prabhu Ram Sharma, Sigdel was appointed to the position.

Earlier, President Paudel had appointed Sigdel as the Army Chief on August 28.

Born in Bhairahawa of Rupandehi district, General Sigdel entered the Nepali Army service 37 years ago. He has done postgraduate studies in Strategic Studies at Tribhuvan University and National Defense University of China.

Sigdel represents a batch of 1986 (2043 B.S.) in the Nepali Army and was a Second Lieutenant at number one in the 25 Basic enrollment. He was also number one in the Higher Command course.

A student of the Army Command and Staff College, he has led the war operations department and the directorate general of order, policy and planning of the Army Headquarters.

General Sigdel, who has also been the military secretary of the Commander-in-Chief, also worked at the leadership level of the COVID-19 Crisis Management Centre.

CoAS Sigdel was promoted to the rank of CGS last November 2023 and Brigadier General in September 2019.
