The Nepali Congress marked the 111th birth anniversary of its founding leader BP Koirala on Monday only for formalities.
There was no enthusiasm among the NC activists and cadres to recall late leader BP Koirala, who stood in favour of constitutional monarchy and democracy throughout his life. But the NC gave up the policy of constitutional monarchy and went for the republic system in 2007. As the party abandoned the key ideology of BP, it also stopped marking his birth and death anniversary as in the past.
Only a few formal programmes were organised in Kathmandu, Dhading and Sarlahi and other few places to commemorate the leader. While party president Sher Bahadur Deuba addressed a function organised in Kathmandu, Agriculture Minister Ram Nath Adhikari attended a function in Dhading.
BP, who led the anti-Rana movement of 1951 which ended the family rule, was the first elected Prime Minister of Nepal. However, he was jailed for years and died in 1982.
