Kathmandu, August 27: The Nepal-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized a reception to welcome the newly appointed ambassador of the Republic of Myanmar to Nepal, Myo Myant Maung. In a meeting held at the Myanmar Embassy in Kathmandu on Monday, Association President Shiv Kumar Agrawal expressed the belief that bilateral relations would be further strengthened during the tenure of newly appointed ambassador Myo Myant Maung

Referring to the contribution made by the Association in the field of bilateral trade for the last 13 years, he said it would prove to be a milestone if direct flights between the two countries could be started during the tenure of Ambassador Myo Myant Maung. Recalling that 80 per cent of the population in Myanmar is Buddhists, he said direct flights from Myanmar to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, were commercially possible. He said that direct flights can also provide service to a large number of Nepali speakers in Myanmar.

Expressing the belief that the payment problem, which has been a problem in trade between the two countries, would be facilitated during the tenure of the new ambassador, Agrawal stressed the need to promote software, handicrafts, high-value agricultural products, tea and coffee among the sectors that Nepal can export.

Ambassador Myo Myant Maung said the government and people of Myanmar have goodwill towards Nepal and it would be further strengthened. He also pledged to help in resolving the problems seen in bilateral trade and expanding further business. Stating that he had plans to promote direct air service sustainably to increase the number of Myanmar tourists in Nepal, he pointed out the need for a package program related to tourism for the same. He said that both countries should increase their visits by displaying documentaries for the promotion of tourism.
