Kathmandu, August 23: The new Thai government has postponed its hosting of the BIMISTEC Summit scheduled for September 3 and 4 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Thai Foreign Ministry has informed today that the Summit has been postponed until the formation of a new administration.
Thailand currently has a caretaker government following a court's dismissal of Srettha Thavisin as Premier last week and his successor, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has yet to name her cabinet.
The summit had been due to take place in Bangkok from September 3-4. The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) includes Thailand, India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan and its leaders meet every two years for a summit.
Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli was scheduled to attend the BIMSTEC Summit and then leave for New York to attend the UN General Assembly. PM Oli had planned to hold a sideling meeting with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
After the 1990 political change, an unannounced practice was established in Nepal for putting the first leg to Delhi by our PMs before visiting other foreign countries. Since the BIMSTEC Summit has been postponed for an indefinite period, will PM Oli visit to New York via Delhi or say, will Indian PM Modi give time to meet Oli in Delhi, it has not become clear.
Earlier, with the suspicion of postponement of the Summit due to the political change in Bangladesh and also government change in Thailand, Oli had made efforts to pay a visit to Delhi on his way to New York in case of postponement of the Summit.
