A kg of pumpkins costs Rs. 120 in the retail market while the prices of green beans and onions have also reached Rs. 120 per Kilogram. Not only the prices of vegetables have gone up but also of rice.
“This cost Rs. 95 and the shopkeeper is saying that price of a 20-kg sack of rice has increased by Rs. 200,” a gentleman was heard talking with his friends in Pepsicola, Kathmandu-32 the other day.
Similarly, prices of fruits too have skyrocketed. Prices of a kg of jackfruit increased to Rs. 100 from Rs. 50 in a fortnight. A kg of mango costs Rs. 260 and dozen bananas cost Rs. 160 in retail shops these days.
Surprisingly, there is no reason for the hike in the prices of everything. The skyrocketed market prices have affected consumers with low incomes. They find it difficult to manage to buy vegetables for a week with Rs. 1,000.
Surprisingly, there is no one to monitor the markets, and shopkeeper are free to fix the prices of the goods they sell.
