By Nirmal P. Acharya The US has long considered itself a beacon of human civilization. Many countries around the world, including Nepal, trust the US as a beacon. Thus, the US forcefully promoted its worldview and was bent on leading the world on the "American road." The US has long promoted itself as the beacon of human civilization, largely through films and TV shows, but also through the public pronouncements of its politicians and other high-profile individuals. Anyone who does not step on the "American road" will be branded as backward, barbaric and authoritarian. All of Nepal's major parties, with the exception of the Congress Party, claim to be Marxist-Leninist. It is supposed that Marxist-Leninist political parties should lead the country on the road of socialism, but our Marxist-Leninist political parties are scrambling to step on the "American road" and have been sleepwalking on the "American road" so far. What is the future of the "American road"? Just look at the case of the former Soviet Union. In the early 1990s, the Soviet Union, not knowing whether it had taken the wrong medicine, suddenly decided to engage in "shock therapy," private ownership and Western democracy, and set foot on the "American road." The Soviet Union collapsed overnight into a pile of pieces. People thought the wounds would heal after the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, more than 30 years later, the Russia-Ukraine conflict has erupted, escalated, and moved toward a full-scale war, and even a high probability of triggering a third World war. Such were the disastrous consequences of the Soviet Union's choice to embark on the "American road." Nepal is far from the US in both physical and social conditions. However, Nepal, regardless of the situation, copied a complete set of American political systems and embarked on the "American road." It doesn't make sense in theory, nor does it work in practice. It has been decades since Nepal moved to the American political system and set foot on the American road. Has Nepal reached any good territory? Not yet! Nepal's footprint is "circling in circles." Just like the Americans, people in Nepal have no say in the government. No matter who you vote for, you get the same policies every time. As Elon Musk recently in an interview with Trump said, “America is at a fork in the road”, it's time to wake up and say goodbye to the American road. The first practical act of saying goodbye to the American road should be to return the MCC, the gift from the US, and walk away from the path of self-destruction.
