Kathmandu, August 19: Today is the Janai Purnima festival, popularly known as tying thread for the safety of human life.

The Tagadhari community known as Brahaman and Cheetri change the Janai (special thread) and other communities put a threat on hands.

Today is the Kwati festival for the Newar community. They make soup cooked by mixing different types of beans.

In the Tarai districts, sisters tie Rakhi on their brothers. The festival is thus known as Rakhi Bandhan.

The federal government has announced public holiday for today.
