The ruling Nepali Congress has been holding its central committee meeting since August 7. Initially called to discuss the report of the party’s general committee (Mahasamiti) meeting, the ongoing CWC meeting which has been postponed till August 23, discussed the issues relating to the relevance of the formation of the present coalition government, holding the 15th general convention of the party within mid-April 2026 and other issues.

The leaders of the rival faction who expressed their views in the meeting stressed the need for holding the 15th general convention within 2082 BS. Dr. Shekhar Koirala said that the 15th general convention should be held within the deadline. Nepali Congress needs to hold its general convention in every five years, but the party president had been extending their term by a year or six months to buy time.  According to the agreement reached between UML and NC, Sher Bahadur Deuba will become PM in 2083 and the rival faction wants to hold the convention before Deuba becomes PM because when in power, Deuba could play a big role in making his candidate for party president victorious and the rival faction wants to avoid this situation. Now Deuba cannot be reelected as he completed two terms of party president.

Bhim Parajuli, a central committee member, demanded a Hindu nation while party general secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma tabled a proposal seeking the retirement of the leaders after competing certain terms like no leader should be allowed to become PM more than twice and a lawmaker more than four times. But his proposal is likely to fail because many leaders both from the establishment and opposition camps have opposed his proposal, which they argued was brought to prevent Deuba from becoming the PM again.

Likewise, the party discussed whether the party should or not forge an electoral alliance.

However, the CWC meeting is likely to pass the report of the general committee without making amendments to it now. Earlier, Pushpa Kamal Dahal of the CPN-Maoist had ended his coalition with NC and had formed a government with UML citing the documents discussed in the NC general committee meeting, and Deuba had intended to review them. But now in the new situation, the report is likely to be endorsed as it is.
