With the formation of a new coalition government by the two big old parties of Nepal—Nepali Congress and the UML—the future of the third and the fourth big parties look bleak. After the fall of the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government in the centre, the Maoist Centre also lost two provincial governments. Chief Minister Shalikram Jamkattel of Bagmati and Jokh Bahadur Mahara of Lumbini resigned on Sunday paving the way for the new governments of NC and UML in the two provinces. While Chet Narayan Acharya of the UML has been appointed as Chief Minister in Lumbini, Bahadur Singh Lama of the NC has been appointed Chief Minister in Bagmati.
With the resignation of Jamkattel and Mahara, the Maoist Centre is now without any key executive positions in the centre and the provinces.
If the NC and UML abide by the seven-point agreement they inked on July 1 and continue to work till 2027 polls, not only the Maoist Centre but also the Rastriya Swatantra Party will be in a difficult position. While the Maoist Centre, which has lost its popular base over the years, cannot win elections without forging an electoral alliance with one of the two big parties, the RSP, whose popularity was on the rise until a year ago, is now waning because of its president Rabi Lamichhane's involvement in cooperatives frauds. In the past, CPN-UML chairman KP Oli had thrown his strength to protect Lamichhane, now he may not protect him and the parliamentary committee formed to investigate his involvement in the cooperatives fraud may give a decision against Lamichhane. If such thing happens, Lamichhane may not only lose the position of lawmaker but also be imprisoned, and in the absence of Lamichhane, the RSP cannot survive. In the meantime, Deputy Speaker and RSP lawmaker Indira Rana has also been dragged into a controversy for the letter she wrote to the US embassy seeking support for a visa. This case will also put the RSP in a difficult position.
The incidents that are unfolding within the new party has increased the chance of turning the RSP in another Bibeksheel Sajha Party of Rabindra Mishra by 2027. The stunts of Lamichhane and the dispute within the party which spilled after the by-election in Ilam have caused damage to the RSP in the last three months, which could culminate into the collapse of the party sooner or later.
