Kathmandu, July 20: Deputy Speaker Indira Rana is suspected of being involved in human trafficking after she confirmed that she had written a letter to the American Embassy in Kathmandu misusing the letterhead of the House of Representatives.

Rana had written a letter to the Embassy asking for an early visa process of five individuals saying that they were also attending the same conference that she was going to participate in the USA.

On February 26, 2023, she wrote a letter to the American Embassy requesting an early date for the interview of five individuals, Dipendra Gautam, Sushma Lama, Rajesh Lama Tamang, Sujan Magar and Dhan Prasad Gurung.

The Embassy, suspecting the genuenity of applicants, denied the visa.

Rana had stated that they were attending the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women held in New York from March 6 to 17, 2023.

Later, when the five individuals complained about not getting the visa even after paying money to the agent, the issue surfaced. The Rastriya Swatantra Party was informed about the issue earlier, however, chose to remain silent. Efforts were made to settle the issue by refunding the money the agent had collected.

Rana has refuted her involvement on the issue, nevertheless, confirmed that she had written a letter to the Embassy.

If the case was genuine, she would have asked the Parliament Secretariat for a formal process, say observers.
