How has New Delhi been looking at the political developments in Nepal on the eve of the February 7 by-elections? In the absence of any direct public comment on the matter by either a member of the political establishment or, indeed, even by India’s long-lasting envoy in Kathmandu, one has perforce to be guided in that matter by subtle indicators such as a Times of India editorial, entitled Squabbles in Nepal, dated February 3.
In the said piece in that newspaper, which is generally reflective of the Indian government’s point of view on foreign and security policy and enjoys wide circulation among Nepali’s political elite, a careful balancing act has been maintained between Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and Nepali Congress president Krishna Prasad Bhattarai.
