India puts conditions in supplying electricity to Nepal
After months-long indecision regarding the renewal of the electricity supply deal, India has agreed to supply only 554 MW of electricity that too for three months only.
According to the electricity import agreement between Nepal and India, it should have been renewed for one year. The contract, which was supposed to be for one year, was made only until June 2024. According to the new agreement, 554 megawatts of electricity can be imported from India's exchange market for the next three months, said Nepal Electricity Authority spokesperson Chandan Kumar Ghosh.
Out of that, 500 MW will be imported from Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur transmission line and 54 MW will be imported from Tanakpur, he said.
Currently, Nepal is allowed to import 650 megawatts of electricity from India. India has also reduced the quantity of electricity that was renewed for three months only.
There will be no supply of electricity to Nepal during the night. Due to the reduction in quantity and time barriers, Nepali industries and domestic users are going to face load shedding.
As Nepal didn’t focus on the construction of the reservoir model electricity projects, it has enough electricity during the rainy season and scarcity of electricity during the dry season.
The Indian attitude confirms that Nepal should not rely on India and should not focus on exporting electricity to India, instead, focus on the industrialization of the country and supply excessive electricity to the local industries at a subsidized price.
