By Our Reporter  CPN (Maoist Centre) chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has again exhibited his skills to play with the big parties thanks to the greed for power in the Nepali Congress president and UML chairman. In 15 months, Dahal has completed a full circle of coalition by using almost all political parties except for the Majdoor Kisan Party. After the election held in November 2022 threw a hung parliament, Maoist Chair Dahal managed to become Prime Minister with the backing of the CPN-UML although Dahal's party had contested the election by forging an electoral alliance with the Nepali Congress. He did not hesitate to deceive the Nepali Congress, especially its president Sher Bahadur Deuba, and reached Balkot to seek the support of CPN-UML chair KP Oli. Dahal took the move when he was denied the post of Prime Minister by the NC leader, and Oli cashed in on the situation because Oli's single goal was to keep the CPN (Unified Socialist) and Nepali Congress outside the government. Finally, Dahal was elected to the coveted post on December 25, 2022, despite becoming the third largest party with just 32 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives in the strong support of the UML chair Oli. However, the Dahal-Oli alliance did not last more than two months after the election of the President, and the alliance ended in two months on February 27, 2023. Ramchandra Paudel of NC became president with the backing of Maoist Centre and Dahal formed a new government of eight parties including the Nepali Congress. After the UML, two other parties-- RSP and RPP also quit the government, but the Madhes-based fringe parties joined the new NC-Maoist coalition. But within a year, Dahal broke his alliance with the NC and revived the old alliance with the UML. This skill of Dahal to change a foe into a friend in a short time may help him complete a full term of the PM. It seems Dahal is the new incarnation of the two RPPs formed immediately after the 1990s political movement. After the 1994 snap polls, the RPPs kept on changing the partners to reach power, which bred several anomalies in the multi-party system. However, Dahal's ship can sink anytime if the NC and UML ally in future. Had the NC and UML not forged an electoral alliance in 2017 and 2022, Dahal's party would have already become the second Majdoor Kisan Party. But when the UML and NC fear each other and seek the support of the Maoists, Dahal's party has been winning elections to date. The Maoist Centre which had won largest seats at 237 in the 601-member Constituent Assembly in 2008, could win only 83 seats in the second Constituent Assembly in 2013 and became the largest party. Its downward journey continued in the 2017 and 2022 elections by winning just 53 and 32 seats respectively. The party had forged an alliance with the UML in 2017 and with the NC in 2022. Following the formation of the new UML-Maoist government, the NC withdrew its support given to the government in the centre while in Karnali, NC ministers resigned. But in Gandaki and Sudurpashim, the chief ministers dismissed ministers appointed from the Maoist Centre on Tuesday.
