Surprising election result in Pakistan: Who to form government?
Kathmandu, February 10: The general elections in Pakistan on February 8 have given a very surprising result.
Out of a total of 266 seats, the election result in some places is yet to come; however, despite a ban on the Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), supported independent candidates have won a majority of the seats. The final result is yet to come, however, until now, PTI-supported independent candidates have occupied 96 seats, the Muslim League led by Nawaz Sharif bagged 74 seats and Ashif Ali Jardari’s Pakistan People’s Party has bagged 53 seats.
There should be 336 members in the National Assembly of Pakistan. 266 members will be directly elected candidates and 70 seats will be elected through a proportional election. In the proportional election, 60 seats are reserved for women and 10 seats are for the minority community.
Imran Khan, the chair of the PTI is in jail. His party was banned from contesting elections and his supporters contested the elections as independent candidates. It is thus surprising that the independent candidates dominate Pakistan’s legislature.
Who is the next PM?:
A party needs 234 seats to form a majority government in Pakistan.
Nawaz Sharif has already claimed for formation of a coalition government and started talks with small political parties. Also, Bilawal Bhutto of the PPP has claimed a coalition government with the support of other small parties.
Meanwhile, what will be the future of these independently won candidates, it is a question. According to the legislative provision, those independently won candidates should join a party within three days of their victory, otherwise, they will remain as an independent member. It is expected that those independent candidates belonging to the PTI may join a small party which is registered with the Election Commission and should have received an election symbol.
One thing is clear without the support of the independent candidates, none of the parties claiming for the formation of the government will be able to form a government.
