Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal inaugurated the Melamchi drinking water diversion and redistribution ceremony on Monday. It is the fifth inauguration of the project in three years.
It took over 25 years to complete the much-talked-about Melamchi Water Project because of corrupt leaders, and even after completion, it could not be sustainable. This is why it is getting inaugurated every six months or a year.
Former Prime Minister KP Oli inaugurated it for the first time on March 6, 2021, by activating the hydromechanical system in the flushing tunnel of the Sundarijal treatment plant, releasing the water.
A month later, former President Bidya Devi Bhandari initiated a water release into the stream constructed in Bhrikutimandap and officially inaugurated it.
However, the water supply was interrupted due to flooding in June 2021. The temporary water supply was reinstated on April 24, 2022, and was inaugurated by former Minister for Water Supply Umakant Chaudhary.
However, the tunnel was closed again in April 2022 for a month due to increased fears of floods. Former Minister for Water Supply Chaudhary once again inaugurated the water supply from the distribution centre at Mahankal in Kathmandu on December 9, 2022.
With the fifth inauguration of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project, the denizens of Kathmandu and Lalitpur will be receiving water supply from the much-talked-about project, but it is not certain when the supply will be disturbed again and another leader will be inaugurating it again.
